Melisa grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area suburb, Fremont, California. The daughter of two grade school teachers, the youngest of four children, Melisa was always encouraged to be creative. Melisa and her sister often practiced drawing, as children, but Melisa did not try painting until she was an adult. While living in San Francisco, completing her degree in Creative Writing at San Francisco State University, Melisa started teaching herself to paint with a set of watercolor paints on paper.
Melisa says she started painting out of a desire to re-create images from black and white photographs, using bold colors and brushwork. Photography was the basis of many of her early paintings, and she often took photos of subject matter, while teaching herself to paint with oil paints.
Returning to photography, in 2013, Melisa started to show her photos, as well as her paintings, in her San Francisco art studio. In photography, Melisa is able to apply her Painter's eye to photo compositions. With color, line and unique perspectives, she creates a sense of drama in each image she creates. She considers herself a "painter who composes photos" and utilizes this angle to approach photography in an Artistic way.
In person, Melisa smiles often, and exudes a welcoming energy that is reflected in the often bright, happy energy of all that she creates. She likes talking to people, and enjoys the chance to share her creative mind-set, and colorful take on the world, with all those around her.
